What's New for 2019?

There are a few things new for the Hyundai Kona for this year, including most notably, the addition of the new Hyundai Kona Electric model. You'll also find new standard safety features added for this year. The 2019 Mazda CX-3 also adds new safety features for this year to the standard list and gets a mild refresh on the exterior design.

Safety Features

One of the most notable features of the Kona that you can't get on the new Mazda CX-3 is the standard Driver Attention monitoring system that will sound a warning if it detects that the driver is distracted or inattentive and will even suggest a break for coffee or a nap. The Mazda CX-3 doesn't offer any feature like this one. The 2019 Kona comes standard with a rearview camera, forward collision warning, lane keep assist, and the driver attention monitor feature. You'll also be able to add pedestrian detection, rear parking sensors, adaptive cruise control, automatic high beams, blind-spot monitoring, and rear cross-traffic alert.

The Mazda CX-3 comes standard with a rearview camera, low-speed Automatic Emergency braking known as Smart City Brake Support, blind-spot monitoring, and rear cross-traffic alert. Available safety systems include full-speed automatic emergency braking, lane departure warning, adaptive headlights, adaptive cruise control, and traffic sign recognition.

Performance & Capabilities

The Hyundai Kona is available with two different powertrains, including a 147-horsepower 2.0-liter four-cylinder or the available 175-horsepower turbocharged 1.6-liter four-cylinder. The base four-cylinder is paired to a six-speed automatic transmission, while the turbo-four comes with a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission. The 2019 Mazda CX-3 comes with a 2.0-liter four-cylinder that brings 148 horsepower paired to a six-speed automatic transmission. If you opt for the available turbo-four in the Kona, you'll find an even more enjoyable performance than the CX-3.

Each of these SUVs offer front-wheel drive as standard equipment with the option to add all-wheel drive. One thing that the Mazda CX-3 doesn't offer is an all-electric version. The Hyundai Kona Electric offers an option for those looking for a fun and sporty all-electric SUV for life in Michigan.

Technology

Standard infotainment technology includes a 7-inch touchscreen display, two USB ports, Bluetooth, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and a six-speaker sound system. Standard on the Mazda CX-3 is a 7-inch touchscreen display, a control knob, Bluetooth, and more. What's missing is Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, which are not even offered as available features on the new Mazda CX-3. The Kona can be upgraded to include navigation, a larger touchscreen, wireless device charging, HD radio, satellite radio, and more. The only available upgrade for the Mazda CX-3 system is navigation. What you might find confusing about the Mazda system is that it requires you to use the control knob and the touchscreen to control certain features.

Interior Comforts

Each of these SUVs seat five on cloth upholstery, but we're sure that you'll love the fun and functional design of the 2019 Hyundai Kona. The Kona can be outfitted with extra amenities like heated front seats, leather upholstery, ventilated front seats and more to upgrade your comforts on the roads of Novi and beyond. Many of the same features are available on the Mazda CX-3 as well, though the Mazda CX-3 does offer synthetic leather in addition to genuine leather upholstery. Since these are both compact SUVs, the rear seats are on the smaller side, but you'll find enough room for adults to ride in the back row for shorter trips with ease.
